Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, bringing down the curtain on a stellar career.

The announcement came after the conclusion of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane. Ashwin, who has been an integral part of India’s cricketing journey for over a decade, said he would not continue to represent India in any format.

“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin stated at a press conference. He added that while he still feels he has more to offer as a cricketer, he will limit his contributions to club-level cricket.

Ashwin reminisced about his journey, thanking the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), teammates, and coaches who supported him throughout his illustrious career. “I must say I have created a lot of memories alongside Rohit [Sharma] and several of my other teammates,” he said. He extended his gratitude to players like Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara, who played pivotal roles in his success.

Career Highlights

Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 wickets in 106 matches at an average of 24. He trails only Anil Kumble, who holds the record with 619 wickets.

Over the years, Ashwin has been known for his fierce competitiveness and versatility. While he played only one Test in the ongoing series against Australia, his career is marked by unforgettable performances, including match-winning spells at home and abroad.

Emotional Farewell:

An emotional Ashwin chose not to take questions from the media during his announcement. “Truly a very emotional moment. I don’t think I am in a position to answer questions in the right way,” he said. Ashwin expressed his gratitude to the media and the Australian cricket team, whom he called “fierce competitors.”

Future Plans:

Although stepping away from international cricket, Ashwin hinted at staying connected to the game. He is currently a part of the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and the Dindigul Dragons in the TNPL. “As a cricketer, I have just stopped, but I might go on to be involved with the game in other ways,” he said.

Rohit Sharma’s Tribute:

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who sat alongside Ashwin during the announcement, expressed his respect for the spinner’s decision. “Some decisions are very personal, and we as teammates have to respect it. Ashwin has been a cornerstone of our team for many years, and his decision has the team’s complete backing,” Rohit said.

Ashwin’s departure leaves a significant gap in Indian cricket. His contributions to the game, both with the ball and the bat, have been monumental, and his presence in the dressing room will be deeply missed.
