Why We Celebrate Dhanteras: The Significance of the Festival

The first day of Diwali, which is Dhanteras, holds immense significance as it symbolises prosperity, wealth, and happiness. The festival is considered extremely auspicious to make new purchases, especially gold or silver articles and new utensils.

It is believed that the new ‘Dhan,’ which means wealth in Sanskrit or some form of precious metal, signifies good luck, and these new purchases ensure the inflow of both wealth and luck throughout the year.

In addition, there are many legends and folklore related to the ritual of buying new utensils and jewellery.

One such myth is about King Hima’s daughter-in-law, who saved his son from the god of death.

It is believed that Yamraj had appeared in the disguise of a snake, and she prevented him from entering the room by placing a heap of gold jewellery and silver coins as well as a lot of diyas at the door.

The sparkling jewellery and the bright diyas blinded him, and he returned without taking the king’s son, who was destined to die on the fourth day of his marriage. Likewise, buying gold and silver jewellery or new utensils is said to ward off any ill luck and is said to be the harbinger of prosperity

Dhanteras Puja Rituals to Bring in Prosperity

As per the Hindu rituals, people ensure that every corner of their house is spick and span before Diwali celebrations. This is done because it is believed that Goddess Laxmi takes shelter in people’s homes on this day. People also purchase various items made of gold and silver like utensils, jewellery, coins, and bars to bring in prosperity and mark the festival.

While performing the puja, the newly purchased items are offered to Goddess Dhanvantari to attract wealth and good fortune. Moreover, Goddess Laxmi and Lord Kuber are worshipped by singing bhajans, or devotional songs, on this day.
