The contributions of Birsa Munda to India’s tribal movement remain unforgettable. He is affectionately called as Bhagwan Birsa Munda by tribal groups of Jharkhand and Odisha. He was born on November 15, 1875.

Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary is more than just a day of remembrance. It’s a powerful reminder of a leader, who forever changed the course of India’s tribal movement and fought for their rights throughout his life.

Known for his unmatched spirit and dedication, Birsa Munda championed the cause of indigenous communities, standing against injustice and oppression at a time when few dared to do so.

His vision continues to inspire us to work towards a more inclusive world where every voice is heard and every right is protected.

On the occasion of his birth anniversary this year, let’s take a look at his life, legacy, contributions and messages we can share to inspire others:

Who Was Birsa Munda?

India’s struggle for freedom saw countless people from various backgrounds rising against British rule, and among them was the remarkable tribal leader, Birsa Munda.

Hailing from the tribal regions of undivided Bihar (now Jharkhand), Birsa Munda, born in 1875, is revered as a symbol of tribal strength and resistance.

Often affectionately called ‘Bhagwan’ by tribal communities, he became a powerful figure at a young age in mobilising the masses to fight against the British, addressing issues like land exploitation and forced conversion.

Though his life was short-lived, ending in 1900 while imprisoned in Ranchi jail, his impact on the tribal resistance movement remains immortal.

Birsa Munda’s rallying cry for Ulgulan, or revolution, was a powerful pushback against British exploitation. His mission was clear: to prevent the confiscation of tribal lands by non-tribals, which led many to lose their livelihood and endure a harsh bonded labour system.

Birsa’s powerful call for “Abua Raj Ete Jana, Maharani Raj Tundu Jana” (“Let the queen’s rule end, and let our kingdom be established”) resonated deeply, strengthening the tribal cause and building a sense of unity among indigenous communities.

This sentiment earned him the name ‘Dharti Abba,’ meaning ‘Father of the land’.

Why Is His Birth Anniversary Celebrated As Janjatiya Gaurav Divas?

Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary holds special significance as the day is celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, or Tribal Pride Day.

His contribution to protecting tribal traditions and rights left a profound impact, particularly in the Munda belt—covering Khunti, Tamar, Sarwada and Bandgaon in Jharkhand.

His rebellion against British policies and forced conversions also rekindled pride in tribal culture and traditions, uniting people against colonial oppression.

Acknowledging his role in the freedom movement, the Union Cabinet declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in 2021.

This day is a tribute to Birsa Munda’s legacy and a reminder of the sacrifices made by tribal leaders in the freedom struggle.
