Phil Collins admits retirement from music is ‘sinking in’

Phil Collins just admitted retirement is not easy on him.

The 73-year-old former Genesis front man, who announced his retirement in 2022, stepping away from live concerts due to neck and back issues, starred in his documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First.

In the film, the You’ll Be In My Heart hitmaker look rather frail, however in a rather sentimental moment, the musician returns to his personal drum set, sitting at the instruments, holding his drumsticks.

Detailing how the epiphany has slowly dawned upon him that he would no longer be taking the stage to play concerts, Collins said, “It’s still kinda sinking in a little bit.”

“You know, I’m 71. I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,” he added.

As the documentary traces back the life of the iconic musician, it focuses on Collin’s passion for drumming more than his vocal contributions in the music industry.

“I’m not a singer who plays the drums,” the Against All Odds musician stated, clarifying, “I’m more of a drummer who sings a bit.”

Additionally, Phil Collins also had an emotional moment where he was walked up to his drum set by his son, leading the artist to say, “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”
