On Gandhi Jayanti, October 2, both private and public sector banks across the country will be closed. In India, banks are closed for regional holidays that vary as per the state and national holidays that are observed across the country. The national holidays in India are Republic Day on January 26, Independence Day on August 15 and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated annually to honour the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, widely regarded as the “Father of the Nation.” On this day, the entire country pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, and it is recognized as a national holiday.

Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi championed non-violent resistance and played a pivotal role in the struggle for India’s independence from British colonial rule. His steadfast dedication and patience were instrumental in achieving India’s freedom in 1947.

In October, banks will be closed for 15 days in different states due to state-specific festivals. Bank holidays also encompass all Sundays as well as the second and fourth Saturdays.

October 12: Second Saturday/Dussehra (Mahanavami/Vijayadashami)/Durga Puja (Dasain)

October 13: Sunday

October 14: Durga Puja (Dasain)

Banks will be closed in Gangtok.

October 16: Lakshmi Pooja

Banks will be closed in Agartala and Kolkata.

October 17: Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti/Kati Bihu

Banks will be closed in Bengaluru, Guwahati, and Shimla.

October 20: Sunday

October 26: Second Saturday and Accession Day

October 27: Sunday

October 31: Diwali (Deepavali)/Kali Puja/Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birthday/Naraka Chaturdashi

Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Itanagar, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Even on bank holidays, all online and digital banking services will be fully operational for customers without disruption.
